Restaurants

I’m trying to review all the restaurants in Peterborough, I’ve picked up a phone book and gone to the restaurant page. The list: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1vEnidlhAl1lFFlwt6BMTC22mgR5pezNLaIW95iPI3Yw/edit?usp=sharing

1999726 Ontario Inc (aka: Wee Wok Express): I had the General Tao chicken, good chunks of chicken, not too much coating. I asked for medium spicy and it was a nice level of spice and not too sweet. Also ordered an eggroll. Came out around $17 and I was full afterwards.

Cassis Bistro (Lakefield): I had an open faced pork sandwich special for lunch. Salad was served on a separate plate so no food interference. It was very tasty, dessert looked great but I didn’t have any. Very friendly staff. Around $15

Publican House: So far not impressed by the mains I’ve had, loved the Kentucky Fried Cauliflower. First main I had there was undercooked beans with pork belly bacon though we were told it was schnitzel which was a lie. Had a chicken avacado salad that was good.

Firehouse Subs: Had a corned beef sub but poor meat distribution led to the ends just being bread. Very poor quality.

Nosh & Nibs on Queen St.(Closed): Restaurant tables around the edge of a gift shop, I couldn’t bring myself to sit down. Menu was soup, a couple of sandwiches and nachos

Capra Tora: Another wood fired pizza place. The meatball sandwich was messy with overly gloppy sour cheese leading to an overall sour taste. Went back, Noone is paying attention to the door, loud music means they can’t hear people coming in. Menu has no non alcoholic beverages. Awfully slow service for not being busy. I like the Di Rusdo pizza, thin crust is a little greasy 26

Zaffron Grill (Closed): Good price for a lot of good food. European food, enjoyed the Turkey schnitzel and fried feta

Peterburger (Closed): A veggie burger is an extra $2.50

Becky’s Cafe (Norwood): Inexpensive, home fries are literal fries undercooked on the flat top. Perfect sunnyside eggs. $5.99 for two eggs, three sausages, fries and toast

Canoe & Paddle (Lakefield): Bad Teapot, it drips. Service is a bit slow on the refreshals. No vegetarian options. Teapot and plates all cold leading to cold food and lukewarm tea. The food was tasty, average price

Puck & Pint: Lotta drunk regulars on a Monday night dinner. Chipotle bbq qings were sweet, no smoke or heat but they were crispy. Ribs were well cooked but not sauced well. Vinegar coleslaw and crispy fries. $19.00

South: Eatery by Electric City Works(Closed): Works burger was good but messy, nice onion rings. Dirty fries are not vegetarian and don’t advertise that they aren’t. $17 plus tax

Black Horse Pub: Had the whiskey burger and fries. The burger was a little burnt and a bit thin for that. The bbq sauce, bacon and onion rings on top were quite good. Chocolate cake for dessert was good but it was such a small piece I couldn’t really share it.

Amandala’s: Had escargot for a starter and brisket ravioli for dinner. Both were good though the ravioli could have had more brisket as the predominant flavor was the almonds on top. $40 was a bit expensive for dinner

Osmow’s: A falafel wrap with little spice was very tastey and very enjoyable. $9.44

Apollo Grill: Royal Burger with onion rings. Burger patty doesn’t reach the edge of the bun and sauce tastes like ketchup and mustard to me. Onion rings were good. $15

Berc’s Steakhouse: Friendly staff, expensive. Four course meal option. Ordered new york striploin and clam chowder. Clam chowder could have had more seafood and potato but it was tasty. Steak and twice baked potato were good. Creme brule had too much custard to sugar $58

Cosmic Charlie’s: $29 beef pad thai wasn’t spicy was tasty but not spectacular

East Side Mario: Free bread, indicator for Vegan items on the menu but no Vegan items. Slow Service. Hell’s Kitchen Chicken was tasty but not spicy. Tomato garlic soup was good. Pasta with roasted vegetables and goat cheese, the goat cheese was overpowering.

Diner on 7(formerly shrubbys): Small menu, no Benedict. Tea is served in cup with milk poured in. 2 egg breakfast $8.29 undercooked sunny side eggs, cold plate. Good Potatoes, average sausage and toast.

Hanoi House: Fried Tofu Banh Mi sandwich was awesome, $10.99. Vegan tofu curry has the best chickpeas I’d had in a dish. They have the crispiest wings.

R&B Grill (Closed?): Poutine has good fries, ok gravy but needs more curd. Mushroom Swiss burger is ok, a little tough. Eat in food is served in takeout containers. $19.00 with pop

Bar Vita: seafood gorgonzola 33, very tasty but the shrimp had tails left on. Arancini and escargot quite good. Very expensive but I’d eat there again.

Ariyana: chicken shwarma plate with a samosa for 22. Lot of food. Friendly service. Tastey. The samosa wasn’t quite sealed leading to extra crispy filling on one edge which was great. An edtra $1 for a wedge of feta on the salad

Crook & Coffer: mac and cheese brulee special for the mac & cheese fest $12. Crowded or cozy, low tables. Tasty, the cheese cracker on top makes it. Marinara toast on the side. A little on the small side, was told it’s meant as an appetizer . Had the meat pie with fries fir dinner, the fries were shoestring air fried a little crispy for my liking. The beef & beer pie was delightful

McThirsties: Had fish & chips, soggy fish and cold fries.

Parkhill All Day Breakfast(Closed): Giant open signs, posted hours say 8am to 5pm daily. Went at 8:20am on Sunday and it wasn’t open. Second attempt signage now says 9am every day except 8am Tuesday.

Casper (Closed): seems like the same place as zaffron wuth a new name. Sign says best shawarma but there was no meat on the grill. He was nuking something in a baggy fir the previous customer. Only two vegetarian dishes. Didn’t actually eat there.

Chaska: Indian fast food, quite tasty, decently priced.

Barburrito: standard chain burrito joint. Guac is $1 extra. Regular burrito is $10. Chorizo burrito has sausage rounds in it. Tasty. Guac is piled in the middle rather than spread out

Riverside inn: 20 for eggs Benedict with bbq beef. Waitress didn’t write down the whole request and had to come back. Teapot not filled completely . Potatoes looked better than they were. Slow service for an empty restaurant. Went back recently appetizers are the same price as some mains. First Two items I tried to order were out. The place was busy but not full. The shrimp pasta dish I got was not what I asked for but I was in a hurry so I ate it. Overcooked pasta and shrimp with the tail on. Overpriced

Agave: friendly service. Corn on the cob is one cob cut in two, quite tasty. The Puerco Pibil was tasty but it was a small portion. The roasted vegetables that Ange got were plain, requiring hot sauce. It was neat seeing grilled cactus served in a mortar but that wss it.

Kettledrums: $27 panko coated meatloaf & portabella gravy with vegetables and mashed potatoes. Cold plate cooled the veg. Potatoes were good, meatloaf was ok, not enough gravy. At the narrower parts all I could taste was panko reminding me of those cheap meat cutlets that I despised growing up. The amount of food was good but I do think it was overpriced.

Aviemore: texas burger and fries 13.99. Texas burger has fried onions and bbq sauce. Heard the waitress explaining to the cook what a texas burger is. Burger is very messy but tasty, seems like a good patty. Fries are well done frozen fries . Cash only with atm

Castle John : yorkies 15, burger 17. Regular sized yorkie, chewy with a scoop of potatoes and a little roast beef cubes. Tasty but over priced. Irish corned beef burger is not a burger, it’s a ruben on a bun with lettuce tomato pickle. Salad comes in its own bowl with dressing on the side making it difficult. 36.16

Chuck’s Roadhouse: ribs & wings 19.99 got medium sauce for the wings. Friendly service. Noisy atmosphere, wouldn’t come for a conversation. Four ribs and four breaded wings with fries. Wings well cooked but lame sauces, ribs average for a chain.

Dr. J’s: no drink menu but does have fountain drinks. Wings are ok, poblano hot was spicy but not flavourful.18 for a pound of wings. The build your own platter seems the way to go. The macaroni salad is vinegar based. The beans are ok but not Sam’s quality.

Brother’s Pizza: friendly service good pizza and panzaroti.

Curry Village: asked me to write on Facebook or Instagram. Ordered dinner for one B: Samosa, Bhona Gosht, vegetable curry, palao rice, pappadum and sweet for $33. I added one nan bread, I was also given Mulligatawny soup. The food was great and I couldn’t eat it all so I brought some home.

Dragon Yan: ordered takeout on a Tuesday, doesn’t seem busy but it is taking longer than the 20 minutes they said it would. Whole meal in one container execept the cool egg roll. Chicken fried rice was tast with shredded chicken throughout. Fried shrimp tasteless. Chicken chop Suey was just taste if bean sprouts.. Chicken balks average.

Dreams of beans: cafe food. Spinach filled pastry with tea for 9.95, very tastey. Also have bagel sandwiches. Friendly and good service.

Dockers Fish & Chips: Thursday special haddock & chips for $11.99. Great fish & chips, packet tartar sauce. Finely chopped creamy coleslaw. Gravy is meh.
Had a piece of coconut cream pie bevause it was the special. Good service

El Camino’s: $18 for a medium pulled pork burrito with not a lot of pork. Couldn’t detect any guacamole. It was tasty.

Fresh dreams: watermark on memu. Cash only and expensive . Tried all the tapas and it was all delicious. Service if very friendly though the one server wanted to take my plate

Curry Mantra: $20 for mumchurian chicken with rice side and rose ball. Not fast but made fresh to order. Tasty but chicken is quite chewy

Levantine Grill: very tasty chicken wrap.

The El(P): had the special, 6 ribs for $23 no sides. The sauces was tastey but the ribs were chewey. Added an order of truffle fries for $14 which were tasty but had to have been sitting as they weren’t hot just kinda warm. Only two veggie dishes if you have the cold soba noodles without chicken. No indication on the menu that the noodle dish is cold.

Erben: $20 mushroom ravioli very tastey and enough food to fill though I got the chocolate lava cake for dessert $10. Music is a little loud for
conversation but it was good. Friendly staff.

Gerti’s: good burger 8oz woth fries and chipotle mayo for $24

180 Hunter: very busy 8pm, please wait to be seated but no host. They spray the patio with scented water . Fish & chips $23 one piece of crispy haddock was good, fries very tasty. Warm creamy coleslaw on wilted greens was not goid

Souvlaki pit: 21.45 for chicken souvlaki dinner and a coke. Cash only. Warm rice, unseasoned fries and damp salad. The chicken was tastey

Malai Thai Cuisine: $18 for basil beef. Very fast, though I was thenonly one in the restaurant. Quite tasty. Will come back to try the general tao chicken

Sticks sports pub: very busy on Thursday at 6. Fish & chips two pieces for 17.99. sat in the back betting area which was empty. Cod is kinda small but super crispy, fries are good. Lots of tartar sauce, and Vinegar coleslaw . Service was fast and friendly.

Friendly Indian Cuisine: beef kahdai $15.99, I was warned it’s spicy but I ordered it anyway with some garlic naan. It wasy limit of spicy and so good. Very friendly staff.

Black Horse: Had the whiskey burger and fries. The burger was a little burnt and a bit thin for that. The bbq sauce, bacon and onion rings on top were quite good. Chocolate cake for dessert was good but it was such a small piece I couldn’t really share it. Calamari is over breaded

Royal Paan: vegetarian cuisine, Tandoori Momo and Bombay Vada Pav. Restaurant is quite cold, several booths but plastic trays, cutlery and takeout container. Food is tasty, but medium spicy is quite spicy fir me

Dream of Beans: daily special lunch $21. Chicken club & salad. Tasty but greasy, good bread but it doesn’t hold up to the grease. Big side salad.

Love You Mean It: Friendly staff. Was recommended to try the gochujang wings and brussel salad. The salad was great but the wings were very vinegary with just a hint of gochujang. Tried a bite of the gyoza and watermelon salad both of which were good. went back and tried almost everything on the menu and it was all good.

Ghost Taco: friendly service! On taco Tuesday got four tacos for the price of three. $15. Good selection. Gochjang tofu was crispy and spicy and tasty. Carnitas and Birria a little overwhelmed by its toppings. The fish taco is a fish stick that is hard to eat with all the other toppings. All was tasty but my plate had so much toppings on it afterwards.

Spaghetti House: Penne Alla Vodka with Ceasar salad and garlic bread for $16.59. Weak Ceasar on a side plate with toasted white bread croutons . Large plate of penne has bacon in it. Not a good place for vegetarians. Garlic bread lacks garlic.

Happy Palace Chinese and Canadian: Ordered Combo S, egg roll, general tso chicken and fried rice for takeout. Egg roll was average, the general tso’s chicken was soggy and all the sauce was at the bottom of the takeout container. rather bland. $15

Eggs Benedict

I believe I have tried all the places that serve Eggs Benedict in Peterborough.

Fork it: A good sized teapot that didn’t drip and multiple types of benny. I tried the peameal and it was perfectly cooked. Good price at $13.99.

Stacked: Benedict came with shredded cheese in the hollandaise. English muffin could be toasted more. Potatoes are just ok, could be crispier. Fresh Fruit = three small pieces of fruits. $11.99 plus $2.49 for tea

Black Honey(untested since new ownership): Prettiest benedict of all, very tasty and a lot of food. Came with salad and fresh fruit. The bacon was a smaller than any other. Good Price $13.5

Chef Basal Cuisine: Big pile of roasted potato with bell pepper and onion, maybe the best potatoes. The benedict was great and there was fresh fruit on the plate. Cold plate meant the egg cooled off quickly and the english muffin could have been toasted more. $14.94 with a tea.

One Fine Food: Two eggs on one large homemade english muffin. Quite tastey though the egg was a bit watery. Best peameal bacon. Deep fried potato with homemade ketchup. As expensive as two dishes but less food, $16.

Electric City Bread Company(Closed, now The Vine): No Eggs Benedict weekdays. Very tastey but only one english muffin. I think a second english muffin to help wipe up the egg yolk and hollandaise would be good. Average price but I’m still a bit hungry.

The Only: Very tastey, home fries and hollandaise has some paprika, cold plate lead to quick cooling food. Average price.

Publican House : Eggs benny is tastey comes with deep fried potato and fruit. Good price $13.

The Ashburnham Alehouse: Tastey but the english muffins need to be toasted, good fried potato wedges and fruit. Good Price, you get enough food for your money, $14.

Revelstoke: Tastey but the messiest benny. Combination of crumbly biscuit, half avacado and lettuce made it hard to cut and get on the fork. The pulled jackfruit added a nice spiciness. Expensive at $18 for benny and tea.

Wimpy’s Diner: Good eggs benedict with three eggs, and Good potatoes. Average price.

Smitty’s: Benedict was good and the teapot was a good size. $14.99.

Jack’s Family Restaurant: Benedict was good but the hollandaise was surprisingly pale and thin, they have pie. Good price $10.99. I should go back for the Fisherman’s Breakfast.

Garden and Fields (airport): Eggs a little watery, they have pie though I didn’t try it. Average Price $12.

Holiday Inn: Eggs are good, potatoes rubbery and uncooked with undercooked green peppers and onions. They gave me replacement potatoes deep fried with smaller pieces of undercooked bell pepper and onion. Average Price. Pay and display parking now.

Thurstons cafe(Lock St. Diner): The benedict was ok but the potatoes were a rubbery. Good Price $15.95

Queensway: Good eggs benedict, deep fried potatos. Good Price $13.70.

Copper Spoons: Benedict was good the shredded potatoes were cooked but could be crispier. Good price.

Sunset Grill: three eggs over easy instead of two poached, potatoes were cooked but could have been a bit more crispy. Good price $13.25.

Fifties Good Time Cafe: No eggs benedict but had really tasty food and the biggest tea pot. Cheap prices, cash only.

Chemong Lodge: The breakfast brunch is awkward, some of the hot items were cold and cold plates don’t help. Everything tasted great. Ended up having a vegetarian eggs benedict made for us that was excellent with a piece of butternut squash. Single cup tea post were small but didn’t drip. Wouldn’t do the brunch buffet again but would go ordering a la carte. Very Expensive.

The Pin: Benedict comes on a crepe or waffle, I chose the waffle. The waffle falls apart a bit under the hollandaise. Chopped ham fills the waffle holes but falls off the fork easily. Perfectly poached eggs, hollandaise is good but is more like mayonnaise. Home fires were rubbery. Really good earl grey comes with a timer to let you know it’s done steeping. $19 for the benny, $4 for the tea comes to $26.

Aviemore: red pepper cheese sauce not hollandaise which was much too salty. Deep fried potato. Good price.

Southside Pizzeria: Smallest tea pot, no eggs benny, Potatoes could have used a little more time on the flat top but they were cooked properly. Cheap, comparable to Fifties and East City.

East City Coffee shop: Potatoes still the best in town, no eggs benny, slightly more expensive than Fifties Cafe.

Speakeasy: Ok eggs benedict but gristly peameal, deep fried dollar fries. Average Price $13.99.

Square Plates: Only one person working for the place, potatoes weren’t cooked and no butter for hollandaise first time I went. The second time I went and ordered bennedict he rolled his eyes before asking how i like my eggs. The eggs weren’t bad. Cheap Price $8.99.

CC’s (formerly Corner Cafe): Ceramic tea pots that drip at the end of a pour. Tea is $2.50. Benedict is $14.99. Benedict is nicely cooked. Home fries are sliced potato deep fried, a little undercooked.

Vic’s Lake & George Bistro (Now Vic’s Burgers): Open but no lights on, a lot of morning sun at 8am. Good Eggs Benedict with shaved ham instead of peameal, lots of hollandaise. Small orange segment and unripe tomato slice on the side. Good home fries. Served on a cold plate. Friendly Service.

Double Dz: $20 eggs Benedict and a tea. They claim to make their own corned beef and sausage patties. Service is not fast. Hollandaise is thin, english muffin is a little undertoasted, but a nice big piece of prameal bacon. Home fries aren’t crispy. The whole meal was bland. The plate was too small for the meal and the raised edges threatened to tip while cutting the English muffin.

The Vine: $18. Benedict on a biscuit with seitan bacon. Tasty but the hollandaise reminded me of mayonnaise. Salad, home fries and fresh fruit as side. Cold plate.

Black Horse: big pieces of peameal on Benedict. Served with deep fried potatoes and a slice if orange . Plate was room temperature. The english muffin light toasted. Good. The place is empty

Dreams of Beans: $19. Medium eggs were hard. Good Hollandaise and a generous pieve of peameal bacon. The potatoes were tasty and almost warm on a cold plate.

Ellies (formerly dinner on 7)(also formerly the lighthouse?): Tea is by the cup. Hollandaise is pale but tasty, big piece of peameal and good toasted English muffins. Served on a cold plate. Big roasted potatoes which were tasty but cold when I got to them

Vanilla Room: special eggs Benedict, $16 for one egg, $3 more for two. Asked for Earl grey tea was told they could make me a latte like a london fog instead. Total came to more than $30. Untoasted english muffin, cold tomato, strip bacon, broken pesto hollandaise and cold micro greens on top. Served with potato cold chips and ranch dip.

Monaghan cafe (closed): While it is true that a lot of places of over salt and over sugar food it is also true that a little seasoning can bring out the flavour in foods. The peameal bacon was not cooked to caramelize and had no flavor. Most hollandaise sauces contain a little lemon and salt to flavor the egg yolk and butter combination, some even have a little pepper or taragon theirs had no flavour. The English muffin could have been toasted a litte more to hold up to the hollandaise and egg. The last of of the potatoes had one or two pieces and then the nearly burnt bits leftover from other orders. The vaguely blueberry flavoured milk was also disappointing. As for price, of the nine cafes and diners I’ve been to before this was the most expensive $19.00.

Daylight diner (replaced by Chef Basal Cuisine) : Tastey eggs benedict with deep fried potatoes. Cold plates, made the food cold. Good Price $11.99

Carousel (Closed): Eggs Benedict only available on Sunday. It’s good, deep fried potatoes. Good price. Permanently Closed

Kelly’s Cafe: closed

Ricky’s All-Day breakfast (closed): The worst place in Peterborough, I couldn’t actually eat my meal. Half cooked potato shreds and un-toasted english muffin, thin white sauce that was not not hollandaise and tasted of too much lemon to hide whatever mistake. Wasn’t worth the price of $13.99

The Whistlestop(Closed): Good benedict with plain deep fried potatoes, the plate was cold. Good price $10.99.

Hendow’s Fine Foods(Closed): The tea was loose leaf but with lukewarm water. The Eggs Benedict was served on garlic mashed potato with sausage cut up in it. The benny was very tasty but I would have preferred the sausage on the side. A side of roasted potatoes with the mashed potato was a bit much.

Mommas Country Kitchen(Closed now South): Benedict comes with mommas special sauce (cheese sauce), not as salty as aviemore. Home fries aren’t par boiled before deep frying. Price is good.

Nateure’s Plate (Closed): A very tastey vegan benedict with great potatoes on the side, the ‘hollandaise’ gave more of a mayonnaise taste but it was good. I wouldn’t have known the bacon and eggs weren’t real bacon and eggs. On the expensive side.

Shrubbys Pit Stop (Closed, now Diner on 7): Excellent eggs Benedict, though the cubed potatoes were undercooked. The shredded potatoes may have been better. Good price $12.95.

Corner cafe(Closed, now CC’s): Good eggs and hollandaise, under-toasted muffins, plain deep fried potatoes. Homemade pie on the dessert board. Good Price
