Eggs Benedict

I believe I have tried all the places that serve Eggs Benedict in Peterborough.

Fork it: A good sized teapot that didn’t drip and multiple types of benny. I tried the peameal and it was perfectly cooked. Good price at $13.99.

Stacked: Benedict came with shredded cheese in the hollandaise. English muffin could be toasted more. Potatoes are just ok, could be crispier. Fresh Fruit = three small pieces of fruits. $11.99 plus $2.49 for tea

Black Honey(untested since new ownership): Prettiest benedict of all, very tasty and a lot of food. Came with salad and fresh fruit. The bacon was a smaller than any other. Good Price $13.5

Chef Basal Cuisine: Big pile of roasted potato with bell pepper and onion, maybe the best potatoes. The benedict was great and there was fresh fruit on the plate. Cold plate meant the egg cooled off quickly and the english muffin could have been toasted more. $14.94 with a tea.

One Fine Food: Two eggs on one large homemade english muffin. Quite tastey though the egg was a bit watery. Best peameal bacon. Deep fried potato with homemade ketchup. As expensive as two dishes but less food, $16.

Electric City Bread Company(Closed, now The Vine): No Eggs Benedict weekdays. Very tastey but only one english muffin. I think a second english muffin to help wipe up the egg yolk and hollandaise would be good. Average price but I’m still a bit hungry.

The Only: Very tastey, home fries and hollandaise has some paprika, cold plate lead to quick cooling food. Average price.

Publican House : Eggs benny is tastey comes with deep fried potato and fruit. Good price $13.

The Ashburnham Alehouse: Tastey but the english muffins need to be toasted, good fried potato wedges and fruit. Good Price, you get enough food for your money, $14.

Revelstoke: Tastey but the messiest benny. Combination of crumbly biscuit, half avacado and lettuce made it hard to cut and get on the fork. The pulled jackfruit added a nice spiciness. Expensive at $18 for benny and tea.

Wimpy’s Diner: Good eggs benedict with three eggs, and Good potatoes. Average price.

Smitty’s: Benedict was good and the teapot was a good size. $14.99.

Jack’s Family Restaurant: Benedict was good but the hollandaise was surprisingly pale and thin, they have pie. Good price $10.99. I should go back for the Fisherman’s Breakfast.

Garden and Fields (airport): Eggs a little watery, they have pie though I didn’t try it. Average Price $12.

Holiday Inn: Eggs are good, potatoes rubbery and uncooked with undercooked green peppers and onions. They gave me replacement potatoes deep fried with smaller pieces of undercooked bell pepper and onion. Average Price. Pay and display parking now.

Thurstons cafe(Lock St. Diner): The benedict was ok but the potatoes were a rubbery. Good Price $15.95

Queensway: Good eggs benedict, deep fried potatos. Good Price $13.70.

Copper Spoons: Benedict was good the shredded potatoes were cooked but could be crispier. Good price.

Sunset Grill: three eggs over easy instead of two poached, potatoes were cooked but could have been a bit more crispy. Good price $13.25.

Fifties Good Time Cafe: No eggs benedict but had really tasty food and the biggest tea pot. Cheap prices, cash only.

Chemong Lodge: The breakfast brunch is awkward, some of the hot items were cold and cold plates don’t help. Everything tasted great. Ended up having a vegetarian eggs benedict made for us that was excellent with a piece of butternut squash. Single cup tea post were small but didn’t drip. Wouldn’t do the brunch buffet again but would go ordering a la carte. Very Expensive.

The Pin: Benedict comes on a crepe or waffle, I chose the waffle. The waffle falls apart a bit under the hollandaise. Chopped ham fills the waffle holes but falls off the fork easily. Perfectly poached eggs, hollandaise is good but is more like mayonnaise. Home fires were rubbery. Really good earl grey comes with a timer to let you know it’s done steeping. $19 for the benny, $4 for the tea comes to $26.

Aviemore: red pepper cheese sauce not hollandaise which was much too salty. Deep fried potato. Good price.

Southside Pizzeria: Smallest tea pot, no eggs benny, Potatoes could have used a little more time on the flat top but they were cooked properly. Cheap, comparable to Fifties and East City.

East City Coffee shop: Potatoes still the best in town, no eggs benny, slightly more expensive than Fifties Cafe.

Speakeasy: Ok eggs benedict but gristly peameal, deep fried dollar fries. Average Price $13.99.

Square Plates: Only one person working for the place, potatoes weren’t cooked and no butter for hollandaise first time I went. The second time I went and ordered bennedict he rolled his eyes before asking how i like my eggs. The eggs weren’t bad. Cheap Price $8.99.

CC’s (formerly Corner Cafe): Ceramic tea pots that drip at the end of a pour. Tea is $2.50. Benedict is $14.99. Benedict is nicely cooked. Home fries are sliced potato deep fried, a little undercooked.

Vic’s Lake & George Bistro (Now Vic’s Burgers): Open but no lights on, a lot of morning sun at 8am. Good Eggs Benedict with shaved ham instead of peameal, lots of hollandaise. Small orange segment and unripe tomato slice on the side. Good home fries. Served on a cold plate. Friendly Service.

Double Dz: $20 eggs Benedict and a tea. They claim to make their own corned beef and sausage patties. Service is not fast. Hollandaise is thin, english muffin is a little undertoasted, but a nice big piece of prameal bacon. Home fries aren’t crispy. The whole meal was bland. The plate was too small for the meal and the raised edges threatened to tip while cutting the English muffin.

The Vine: $18. Benedict on a biscuit with seitan bacon. Tasty but the hollandaise reminded me of mayonnaise. Salad, home fries and fresh fruit as side. Cold plate.

Black Horse: big pieces of peameal on Benedict. Served with deep fried potatoes and a slice if orange . Plate was room temperature. The english muffin light toasted. Good. The place is empty

Dreams of Beans: $19. Medium eggs were hard. Good Hollandaise and a generous pieve of peameal bacon. The potatoes were tasty and almost warm on a cold plate.

Ellies (formerly dinner on 7)(also formerly the lighthouse?): Tea is by the cup. Hollandaise is pale but tasty, big piece of peameal and good toasted English muffins. Served on a cold plate. Big roasted potatoes which were tasty but cold when I got to them

Vanilla Room: special eggs Benedict, $16 for one egg, $3 more for two. Asked for Earl grey tea was told they could make me a latte like a london fog instead. Total came to more than $30. Untoasted english muffin, cold tomato, strip bacon, broken pesto hollandaise and cold micro greens on top. Served with potato cold chips and ranch dip.

Monaghan cafe (closed): While it is true that a lot of places of over salt and over sugar food it is also true that a little seasoning can bring out the flavour in foods. The peameal bacon was not cooked to caramelize and had no flavor. Most hollandaise sauces contain a little lemon and salt to flavor the egg yolk and butter combination, some even have a little pepper or taragon theirs had no flavour. The English muffin could have been toasted a litte more to hold up to the hollandaise and egg. The last of of the potatoes had one or two pieces and then the nearly burnt bits leftover from other orders. The vaguely blueberry flavoured milk was also disappointing. As for price, of the nine cafes and diners I’ve been to before this was the most expensive $19.00.

Daylight diner (replaced by Chef Basal Cuisine) : Tastey eggs benedict with deep fried potatoes. Cold plates, made the food cold. Good Price $11.99

Carousel (Closed): Eggs Benedict only available on Sunday. It’s good, deep fried potatoes. Good price. Permanently Closed

Kelly’s Cafe: closed

Ricky’s All-Day breakfast (closed): The worst place in Peterborough, I couldn’t actually eat my meal. Half cooked potato shreds and un-toasted english muffin, thin white sauce that was not not hollandaise and tasted of too much lemon to hide whatever mistake. Wasn’t worth the price of $13.99

The Whistlestop(Closed): Good benedict with plain deep fried potatoes, the plate was cold. Good price $10.99.

Hendow’s Fine Foods(Closed): The tea was loose leaf but with lukewarm water. The Eggs Benedict was served on garlic mashed potato with sausage cut up in it. The benny was very tasty but I would have preferred the sausage on the side. A side of roasted potatoes with the mashed potato was a bit much.

Mommas Country Kitchen(Closed now South): Benedict comes with mommas special sauce (cheese sauce), not as salty as aviemore. Home fries aren’t par boiled before deep frying. Price is good.

Nateure’s Plate (Closed): A very tastey vegan benedict with great potatoes on the side, the ‘hollandaise’ gave more of a mayonnaise taste but it was good. I wouldn’t have known the bacon and eggs weren’t real bacon and eggs. On the expensive side.

Shrubbys Pit Stop (Closed, now Diner on 7): Excellent eggs Benedict, though the cubed potatoes were undercooked. The shredded potatoes may have been better. Good price $12.95.

Corner cafe(Closed, now CC’s): Good eggs and hollandaise, under-toasted muffins, plain deep fried potatoes. Homemade pie on the dessert board. Good Price
